ST. PETERSBURG, FL – St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman announced Monday that the city’s Main Library will be named after former President Barack Obama. Kriseman said the announcement was made in celebration of President’s Day and Black History Month.
"We felt the most appropriate thing to name after President Barack Obama was a library, where books are read, ideas are exchanged, research is conducted, and where forums and lectures can take place," Kriseman said on Twitter.
The library at 3745 Ninth Ave. N. also will undergo a $6 million renovation with the money coming from Penny for Pinellas funds. The renovated library will have an outdoor gathering space, revised interior spaces, a renovated rear patio and 42 parking spaces, the Tampa Bay Times reported. The library also will emphasize presidential history and the contributions of the former president and his wife, Michelle.
